Demonstrating our mission
The underlying mission of Startup Genome is to help people. We build stuff that helps startup community builders do what they do better: help entrepreneurs. Our mission is altruistic in nature. We wanted to demonstrate to the world that we care so deeply about our mission that it's more important to us than generating personal wealth.
We also believe in open source. All the data on Startup Genome is open via our API and exportable to CSV from any location page. One day soon we plan to open source our entire codebase. By doing so, we hope that more people will build upon our work and create helpful tools for entrepreneurs - stuff we haven't even thought of yet. We don't want to profit from that. We want it to go into the public sphere and help as many people as possible.
Of course, if you want to use the Startup Genome API to turn a profit, more power to you. Our data is available via the Open Data Commons Attribution License (ODC-By) v1.0, which allows anyone to do basically anything they want with it, even commercially.
